Headlights
The glass in front of the headlights bears a lot of the wind, stones and dust collision during driving, especially when travelling fast on motorways and highways. As a result, the glass starts to deteriorate in condition, losing opacity and becoming more and more blurred. They can also develop moisture marks inside from rain, water ingress and other factors.
Getting the headlights renovated, refurbished periodically can save a lot of money. It is just one of the parts that is often ignored, unless there is a need to replace it. But driving around with a blurred headlight is like driving at night with sunglasses on. Or driving while suffering from a cataract in the eyes. The vision is blurred. Likewise, with a faded glass in front of the lamp and lenses, the light is diffused and scattered, no longer focused straight up ahead in full, as designed and intended.
Headlight renovation:
Headlights wear out over time, due to weather changes, exposure to snow, rain, sun, as well as constant hits from stones, dust, wind while travelling at high speeds. Weather is by far the most important and significant factor in the wear and tear of headlights.
Once the headlights are worn out, they start deteriorating rather fast, the milky, cloudy like section can start from the top or any of the corners and start spreading to cover the entire glass. Then the performance and effectiveness of the headlights are lost. Even though it consumes the same amount of energy, the light produced remains the same, but what comes out from the reflectors and lenses is dispersed, blocked and refracted in such a way that most people assume that headlights need to be replaced.
There are lots of DIY, self help, do it at home kits available to improve the headlights at home, using some kits, tools, abrasives, alcohol etc. These are helpful in improving the condition. These typically are only for the exterior of the headlamps. They do not come with any materials for cleaning the inside of the lights, which is a much more delicate and time consuming process.
But they are not as good as a professional renovation job.
We do a very similar renovation process, using much more expensive tools, materials, various pastes, polish etc. We also have a lot of experience in doing this work, so we know exactly what we are doing. We don’t renovate the headlight while leaving it in the car. We take the lights out and clean it inside out.
The sooner a headlight is restored back to its original condition, the cheaper it is. This is because as time goes by, the inside also starts getting damaged. And once we have mold, algae, greening of the sides start, then it gets more expensive as these are time consuming to renovate, correct without damaging any of the internal lenses, reflectors and glass.

Our repair process:
If the headlights are not damaged, and inside looks good, then we can most likely restore the damage just by buffing and polishing the headlamps.
But if there are scratches or deep chips, it would require sanding out the scratched surface, fill the part and polish the area. The work increases substantially if the inside of the lights are also damaged and if there are mold or algae growing inside.
- We first sand and prepare any damaged area using fillers, ensure that the glass is well protected. We do this multiple times to ensure a perfectly smooth and well covered surface to work on.
- We then apply a couple of coats of fine compounds, and buff, to ensure good finish later and we sand again, ensuring that all tiny pinholes are filled.
- The final fine compounds is applied towards the end, but we do this twice, to bring a bright shine and completely see through glass finish.
- If we then see issues on the inside of the glass, we use special chemicals that do not damage the lenses and reflectors to clean the inside of the headlights and restore it to its former glory.
