In the past, wheels used to be made of steel, and normally a hub cap used to mask its appearance. Steel wheels are heavy, add a lot of weight to the car, and are inefficient in terms of aerodynamics and thermal properties for brakes. These days, it is more common to see wheels made of various alloys. These can be aluminium entirely, or diamond cut. Both of these are very susceptible to damage from kerb, edge of pavement damage while parking.
Kerb damage is the most common cause of damage to all types of alloy wheels. These not only look ugly, gives a sense of car not being looked after, not cared for, but also attracts, promotes more damage, as a person gives up on looking after the wheels. It is then a downward spiral to more and more damage, leading to damage even to the tyres.
Kerb damage on alloy wheels:
Most of the damages to alloy wheels are caused during parking, from the edge of pavements, called kerbs, so these are referred to as kerb damage. With the advent of cameras on the sides of cars, under the mirrors or in B pillars, it is much easier to avoid kerb damage these days, but it still happens.
It is fairly easy to get too close to the kerb or edge of pavements, especially in Amsterdam, where parking spaces are tight, roads and lanes can be narrow and parking spots are very narrow as well. Once the alloy wheel touches a kerb, it gets damaged, and it is then a downward spiral of more and more damage, if the first damage is not rectified in time. This is due to psychology of starting to ignore the damage, accept fate and giving up on trying to avoid more damage.
If is often we see cars that have gone too close and then touched the edge of pavements, causing kerb damage to the alloy wheels. 360 degree cameras in modern cars help drivers avoid such damages, side view camera help assist in not getting too close to the kerb.
But still, we see kerb damage even in the most modern cars.
Once an alloy wheel suffers kerb damage, it can keep getting worse as drivers stop being careful. If the wheel gets too damaged, then it can become impossible to repair, if the structure is compromised, shape is compromised or cuts are too deep. It is most advisable to get the wheels repaired as soon as possible.
In fact, the sooner an alloy wheel kerb damage is repaired, the cheaper it normally is, if the wheel is less damaged and quickly fixed. If left unrepaired, then it attracts more damage till it gets to the point of having to replace the wheel itself, which is very expensive.
If the scratches are not deep, we can most likely restore the damage just buffing and polishing the area. Followed by repainting the wheel.
But if the scratches are deep, it would require sanding out the scratched surface, applying filler, primer, colour matched paint, a fresh clear coat and polish the wheel.
If the wheel is diamond cut, then a cutting machine is used to recut the wheel a millimeter or two deeper, but this can only be done once or twice.
