Bumper damage is the most common form of car damage visible on the streets of Amsterdam and surrounding areas. This is because of the tight nature of parking spaces, tight turns, bollards and pillars, walls in multi storey car parks. Corners of numbers are most vulnerable.
The repair process of damaged bumpers, just paint scratches or dents and scratches, or even broken bumpers, differ vastly from other parts of the car body. This is because bumpers are made of plastic, while the rest of body is predominantly metal. If the bumper is body colour matched, we can match the exact colour of the body paint and restore the bumper to its former glory. We can also repair black and textured finish bumpers to its original condition by matching the texture and colour.
Paintwork scratches to bumpers:
Scratches to bumpers is one of the most common forms of bumper damage. This can cause damage to paintwork if the bumper is colour matched to the body of the car.
In most cases, it causes damage to plastic finish and causes deep scratches, needing plastic repair work to be carried out before we can start repainting the bumper to its original condition.
But often these damages are not just constrained to scratches but also cause dents to the plastic. These dents on plastic have a different repair and removal process than dents on metal. These require heat and massaging, coaxing the plastic gently back to its original shape, before the texture matching work is carried out, followed by primer, paint and clear coat applications.
Scratches that are not deep can be corrected by simply polishing in most cases, and are much cheaper to restore. The way to tell if a scratch is deep or not is by simply running the fingers over the scratches with fingernails. If the fingernails get stuck in the scratches, it is likely deep and requires fresh paint work in the area.
In fact, the sooner a paintwork damage is corrected, the cheaper it normally is, as the paint can start flaking and the damaged area can slowly expand, leading to higher costs later on. Dents ignore for a long time can also settle down in shape and become difficult to restore back to its original condition.
If the scratches are not deep, we can most likely restore the damage just by buffing and polishing the area.
But if the scratches are deep, it would require sanding out the scratched surface, applying filler, primer, colour matched paint, a fresh clear coat and polish the area.
