Upholstery
Car upholstery, especially cloth based, often requires a lot of care. It is a porous material, very breathable, provides great comfort in hot and cold weathers, unlike leathers, that become hot, sweaty and sticky in hot weather and very cold in winters. But then life happens…. entry and exit side of drivers seat takes the most wear and tear, followed by usage by kids, pets, carrying food, transporting household goods, an occasional spill, or a health incidence and soon enough the cloth material is damaged, with deeper damage to the cushioning. Sometimes burn marks from cigarettes or holes due to something getting stuck.
Whatever the kind of damage a car cloth upholstery may suffer, it is most likely repairable and can be brought back into a reasonably good condition. For burns, tears and other damages that leave a gap, we fill that area and stitch the part using very close match of materials. The work is good enough for a normal person who did not know where the damage was to be unable to spot it.
Damages to cloth material in cars:
It requires a fairly skilled technician and a large variety of materials at hand to be able to perform such an intricate repair with a good result, but this is exactly what we do. We have the skills, knowledge and ability to repair damaged cloth materials in cars of various makes, models and from various years.
In most cases, it is a tear due to some small accident in the vehicle, or a spill, or just wear and tear leading to fabric being thinned out and disintegrated in some places. We can repair all these and bring the upholstery back to a good condition that can last many more years. Many of our customers come to us in preparation for a sale of the vehicle.
Often these damages, if ignored, can quickly get enlarged and become very expensive to repair, needing a full upholstery replacement instead of repair. It is advisable to get these repaired as soon as these damages are detected, when small. This allows for a good repair outcome and lasts a long time.
For more substantial damages and repairs, it is advisable to replace the entire cloth material, but an exact match could be difficult to find, so it can easily become a job of having to replace the upholstery for the entire vehicle, all seats, which is too expensive and not worth the cost in many cases.
Hence it is ideal to get small damages repaired promptly.
Most car fabrics are made of velvet, velour or synthetic materials. Sometimes they are other cloth materials. It is fairly simple to cover small holes, tears, gaps, worn out sections of fabric, such that they get a longer life and can last many more years of usage in that particular area. Other areas might suffer the same fate in future, but the repaired area can survive a long time.

Our repair process:
If the damage is to a small area and does not effect the inner cushioning, then the work just involves recreating and reinforcing the damaged fabric.
But if the damage is larger and also involves damage to the cushioning, then first the cushioning needs to be recreated and reinforced, else the fabric would sag and get stretched in unwanted places, leading to tears again.
Our repair process involves several steps:
- First the damaged area is cleaned thoroughly, all dirt, debris, loose materials are removed. This preparation work is necessary to ensure that the entire damage is identified and ready for further work.
- A mixture is then prepared using 70% fibre and 30% glue compound to create a fine blend as a filler, that will be strong and will bond in the damaged area. The area is then cleaned and all excess is removed. A teflon tape is used to cover the area, the area is heated to activate the glue and fibre mixture, repairing any hole to perfection.
- A cooling cushion is used to set the area and prepare for next steps. An adhesive compound is used as a base and matching coloured fibres are used to replicate the fabric and any patterns. This fine, skilled work is carried out in very small parts, till the entire damaged area is fully covered.
- This entire area is then colour matched if there are any differences. All colour differences are then resolved and a final compound of adhesives is used to settle in the newly repaired area to perfection.
